2. Classification by Categories of Innovation

2.1. Definitions

Product Innovation:
Changes in the things (products/services) that an organization offers (Tidd & Bessant, 2009, p. 21).

Process Innovation:
Changes in the ways in which the product or the service is created, produced and delivered.

Architectural Innovation:
The essence of architectural innovation is the reconfiguration of an establish system to link together existing components in a new way. (Henderson & Clark, 2006)

Strategic Innovation:

“A fundamental re-conceptualization of what the business is all about that, in turn, leads to a dramatically way of playing the game in an existing business” (Markides, 1997).


“The capacity to reconceive existing business models in ways that create new value for customers, rude surprise for competitors, and new wealth for competitors “ (Hamel, 2000).

Management Innovation:

“ The invention and implementation of a management practice, process, structure or technique that is new to the state of the art and is intended to further organization goals.” 
(Birkinshaw et al., 2008)


“Management innovation is the introduction of management practices new to the firm and intended to enhance firm performance”
(Mol & Birkinshaw, 2009)
